Product-in-context photography: lifestyle visuals at catalog scale

Packshots, lifestyle photos, in-use shots: why e-commerce brands need in-context visuals, and how to produce them for an entire catalog.

By Etienne Roure

On a product page, the packshot on a white background shows the product. The in-context photo shows how it is used, where it lives, who it is for. Both are useful, and e-commerce brands need both.

The problem is scale. A lifestyle shoot per product works for a collection of ten references. It becomes impossible for a catalog of several hundred.

Packshot and in-context photo: two different jobs

  • The packshot is for comparison and precision: shape, color, details. It must be consistent across the whole catalog.
  • The in-context photo is for desire and understanding: real size, use, brand mood. It must tell a story without misrepresenting the product.

An effective product page combines both, and social media and ads mostly call for the second, in several formats.

Why classic shoots do not scale

Every in-context shot needs a set, lighting, a photographer, retouching and time. Multiply by the number of products, seasons and formats, and the production calendar can no longer keep up with launches.

The result: many products never get an in-context visual, or get a single one reused everywhere.

Generating in-context shots from one packshot

The Product in context automation starts from a single packshot and generates the in-context scenes while applying your brand guidelines:

Prepare the packshot

A product image on a neutral background, ideally cut out, at least 2000 × 2000 px.

Pick the contexts

Lifestyle, studio, seasonal, in use: you define the scene types, lighting, angles and background style.

Run in batch

The automation extracts the product, generates the scenes and integrates it with the right perspective and lighting. A quality check filters out failed outputs.

Approve and export

You compare variants, approve the best ones and export them, named by SKU.

Keeping a consistent catalog

The automation reads your guidelines on every run: colors, mood, composition rules. That is what lets you produce hundreds of visuals that look like they come from the same brand, not from an image generator.

The same products can then feed videos: see what a UGC video costs and how to produce them at volume.
